Derwent Tower

Towering over Dunston, Gateshead, DERWENT TOWER is the brainchild of Owen Luder. The unique structure was built in the late 1960s and is now, sadly, set for demolition like it's sister structure Trinity Square.

Flying buttresses from the fifth floor give rise to the nickname "The Dunston Rocket", although they exist because of sinking foundations during construction.

Cheviot Green is one of the low rise blocks built when the plan to build multiple high rise towers was scrapped following construction set backs.

Tower Court provides four storeys of housing above a row of shops.

The communal entrance to tower court is situated between the row of shops beneath

Even during demolition security is tight with C.C.T.V. monitoring

The first ten floors consist of two bedroom flats, the top nineteen are single bedroom dwellings.

The tower dominates the local skyline, for now at least. The views of the Tyne from the upper floors must be spectacular, although no access has been permitted since 2009.
